Omake no Kobayashi-kun (loosely translated as The extra
Kobayashi-kun)
is MORIO Masami's current manga work. It runs in the monthly magazine Lala
(Hakusensha) and has more than 10 collected volumes to this date.
This is the story of four high school students whose family name
happens to be Kobayashi that end up in the same class. No Kobayashi is
similar to another Kobayashi and in fact, three of them are considered
something similar to the Bermuda triangle. Anybody who gets near, ends
up... well... better left unsaid. New student Kobayashi Yamato is not
afraid however, and already considers them like brothers and sister! Will his
naive youthfulness be crushed forever? Will the everlasting power
of "always happy attitude" overpower the famous trio? Will anybody
survive the year? All this and more, in Omake no Kobayashi-kun! ^^

Yamato KOBAYASHI is a short and extremely cute student who just
transferred to a new high school. To his surprise, it turns out that
he is the fourth Kobayashi in the class! Kobayashi-kun couldn't be
more happy, they are all like a big family!
However, his new classmates soon explain him the facts surrounding
the three Kobayashi... Fubuki Kobayashi is tall, wears glasses, and is
the class representative. She takes her responsabilities very
seriously and inspires fear wherever she is. Chihiro Kobayashi is
tall, handsome and mean. He lives life as he pleases but
nobody is exactly sure of what that is...
Last but not least is Kengo Kobayashi, tall, dark and scary. Keeps to
himself and seems to have a bit of a dangerous past.
But Kobayashi-kun is not scared of them in the least. First he
tries to make friends with Fubuki, who is known to have a bit of
a shotakon problem (shota complex = likes young boys), and eventually manages to
turn them into a four-Kobayashi group that ends up doing mostly
everything together. Chihiro turns into Kobayashi's protector
even as he victimizes him; and like with every great work, eventually
we discover that the past of these characters is not as neat and
happy as it might seem, especially that of Kobayashi-kun.
Omake no Kobayashi-kun is a screwball comedy that
from time to time shows us the darker side of life to help us
enjoy the bright parts even more.
