Part 02. [version 1.0]
"Uhh... I want to die..." Poor Antonio lies in bed sweating all
over and obviously sick as his mother puts wet compresses over his
forehead. If he wouldn't have gotten so wet in the middle of the
night this wouldn't be happening, anyway!
Antonio's mother hears noises outside, it's Maria and her family
getting ready to leave, they are going to see the foreigner's
delegation off.
Antonio's mother would love to go as well, but her "stupid son"
has gotten a cold, so she can't. From the bed, Antonio calls for
Maria in his fever and tries to stand up...
In the street, Maria looks up worriedly...
Then she remembers his kiss the night before.
Her worried face turns into a scowl. "Take care of yourself, Antonio!!"
she yells at him as they leave.
After all, she thinks as she blushes not too happily, it's fair punishment
for stealing away her first kiss.
The trio (Maria, her father and Martin) manage to get a great position
in front line and comment on their great view. Carlos asks which of the
men is Kojirou and Maria and Martin start searching for him eagerly with
their eyes.
However it soon becomes disappointingly clear for them that he is not to be seen
anywhere in the procession.
"The magician big-brother is not there..." says Martin in wonder.
Maria thinks about Kojirou and starts to get anxious. She calls out his name,
asking where he is, and even though Tsunenaga and another of his men exchange
worried glazes, the procession continues on.
Juana appears behind Maria and asks her what she is shouting... Maria asks
her back where is Kojirou but Juana doesn't know who "Kojirou" is.
Maria tells her that it's the Japanese man who took care of Martin, has he
maybe been left behind by the other men?
Juana replies that all the men of the delegation left for Madrid...
But Kojirou wasn't with them, insists Maria. Juana tells her that she
doesn't know which of them is Kojirou because all of their faces look the
same...
But Maria keeps on insisting that she remembers him perfectly. He has a
cool face and narrow eyes but they are of a beautiful black color... And
in spite of this, has she missed him (in the procession)?, asks herself
Maria, still worried about it.
Behind her, Juana tells her that she must discuss something with her, but
that is not a good place, "Tomorrow... at the secret place..."
On the next day Maria is working at the vineyards with her father and
Martin (who, ok, is not exactly working ^^; ). Maria laments with a freshly
cut branch of grapes that she had wanted to give them to Kojirou as a
present...
At her side her father tells her that it's bad luck indeed (and the sweat
drop on his temple is probably more due to the vision of even another day
filled with Maria's sorrowful comments than the heat ^^;;; ). Martin runs
by them playing with the paper bird Kojirou made for him saying that big
brother is a magician, so he will surely fly to meet them!
Maria smiles at that and agrees, then she realizes that it's time to
go to her meeting with Juana so she tries to leave but Martin exclaims
that he wants to go too to the "secret place!"
Maria sweats, "You heard...?"
Martin smiles widely like the saint we all know him to be.
They walk to the lower part of the cliff that starts right in the side of
the castle. Maria explains that there is a hidden exit to the mansion
in there and then tells Martin that was where they (Antonio and her) met
Juana and that's how they become such good friends...
"Sister!!" cuts in Martin in panic.
"What's the problem, Martin?!" As she looks to where Martin is looking at.
Kojirou is lying on the ground, apparently unconscious.
This person is...!!
When Juana opens the door of the secret exit, she finds Maria kneeling
at Kojirou's side and her and Martin looking at her in worry and horror.
Maria urges Juana to call somebody, as Kojirou is not dead. Juana just
stays there doubting but after Maria tells her to hurry up she runs back
to the house.
Inside the house Juana's father and another man discuss about the body
and the fact that the delegation supposedly left in whole for Madrid. Behind
them Phillip appears and asks for how the man is doing--his wounds are grave.
As you can imagine this is a slight problem for the diplomacy and since
they don't want to have problems...
Maria and Martin are praying at Kojirou's side with Juana watching them
when Juana's father enters the room with two soldiers that tell Maria to
step aside. Juana's father says that they are taking him to the monastery's
custody and Maria asks why he can't heal in there...
Juana's father replies that that type of responsibility is not theirs.
Besides, he was rude and violent in the dinner party...
"Kojirou is a kind person," exclaims Maria angrily.
But he is dying and the best place where to take care of him is the
monastery...
"Kojirou is not dying!" cries Maria with ardor.
He is not...
Back in his home, Antonio is still sick and high in fever, but after
4 days he's back to normal and storms into Maria's house demanding to
know why didn't she even inquire about him!
What he finds is Maria and Martin sitting by Kojirou's side, who is
lying in bed with a lot of his head covered by bandages. "WHAT??"
Maria tells him to lower his voice, as there is a wounded person in
the room.
A wounded person...? Antonio suddenly remembers Kojirou as the man
Maria kissed on the cheek and gets all flustered and angry and starts
spanking Maria verbally about her not visiting him with the cold and
instead staying with this man and...
Maria slaps him.
Kojirou is seriously ill, she tells him with her serious expression
showing worry as well. Kojirou was stabbed with something sharp and then
thrown down the cliff. Juana's father couldn't take care of him, so
they took him there to Maria's house.
Antonio asks if they know who did it, but they don't. They also wanted
to give up on him as he is not regaining consciousness...
Martin looks at Kojirou and then goes out of the room with determined
steps. Maria wonders where he is going, but Martin claims her attention.
Martin wonders if he will die and Maria tells him that it's God who
decides that, but that they can pray for him to get better.
As she says this, she remembers another time when she also prayed
for a person not to die.
A quite young Maria and her father prayed at Maria's mother side
for her to get well, but God didn't do it...
Back to the present Maria asks God not to take Kojirou...
Then Antonio appears back in the room and gives Maria a bag
with an excited expression on his face. It's a medicine his brother
sent from the capital. Maria wonders if it's ok, but Antonio reassures
her that it's a cure-all type of thing and that it worked great for
his cold.
Maria is extremely thankful for him, but he brushes that off and
leaves the room cheering her with a big smile.
She takes Martin to his room and tucks him in bed since he fell
asleep, then puts some of the powder from the bag in a bowl with
water and tries to give it to Kojirou but it just slides off the
sides of his mouth.
Maria cleans him worriedly and then, after a moment looking
at him she takes some of the water and bends over him...
Kojirou... get well... I want to see Kojirou's eyes... I want
to hear Kojirou's voice...
She kisses him on the lips, passing the medicine to his mouth...
And as she straightens up, she notices with surprise that
Kojirou is crying!
"Kojirou?!"
